GOLD COAST, AUSTRALIA, January 18, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Tourists staying in Gold Coast accommodation at the start of next month may relish the opportunity to celebrate Waitangi Day in the area.
Each February 6th marks the anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 between the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand and the white European settlers.
People staying in Surfers Paradise hotels who wish to join in with the festivities can do so by heading down to the Parklands Showgrounds on the corner of Parklands Drive and Smith Street on February 5th.
The day is designed to be a celebration of Kiwi culture, with a particular focus on whanau - meaning family - and tikanga Maori, which translates as Maori protocol.
Authentic traditional cultural performances, games and entertainment will be laid on, while cheap accommodation Gold Coast customers and other visitors will have the chance to buy some souvenirs from the numerous stalls.
The organisers have stressed people do not need to hail from New Zealand to visit the site and join in with the occasion.
Cheap accommodation guests keen to check out the celebrations can head to the Showgrounds between 09:00 and 21:00 local time.
Admission will cost AU$10 for adults, while children aged under 14 can get in for free.
For more information on this event, visit the Gold Coast City Council website.
