PHUKET, THAILAND, February 18, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The event is free to watching from one of many vantage points, including starting locations around Putney Bridge, Putney Embankment, Bishops Park, mid-point locations at Hammersmith and Barnes, and finishing points around Chiswick Bridge and Dukes Meadows. Large screens at Bishops Park and Furnival Gardens ensure spectators can see the complete race before and after crews have passed their location.
The Xchanging Boat Race features a contest between Oxford and Cambridge Universities. The brainchild of Charles Merivale, a Cambridge student and his friend Charles Wordsworth who was studying at Cambridge the first challenge was delivered on 12th March 1829. Since that time, the loser of each previous year's race challenges the other to a rematch.
Today, the Xchanging Boat Race is a major international sporting event that draws millions of spectators from around the world, with up to 250,000 coming in person, crowding the banks of the Thames to get a glimpse of the crews as they pass from Putney to Mortlake.
For visitors staying in nearby Cambridge Hotels, there are several boat race events in which to partake including the Thames Crossing Charity Walk, Cutters Race, university party events and the Putney Music Festival, which will be held from Friday 2nd April to Sunday 4th April. Mooring vessels are also available for hire, which enable visitors to view the start of the Isis Goldie Race from these vessels, as well as the main Oxford and Cambridge contest.
Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com, commented: "Many boat fans will be turning up to watch the boat race, this may cause Cambridge a busy place before and after the race itself, so we recommend online reservation of accommodation to ensure getting the hotel and price that you want."
