BERLIN, GERMANY, February 23, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- MaerzMusik, Berlin's annual festival of contemporary music, is due to begin on Friday March 18th this year.
Taking place at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele and other venues around the city, the event will feature specially commissioned orchestral works, improvised performances and avant-garde sound experiments.
This year, the festival has named "the interrelation between sounds and images in movement" as its theme.
MaerzMusik 2011 will open with a performance of Chroma by English composer Rebecca Saunders, whose latest work has been described by the organisers as "an open-ended concept that is composed anew for each venue".
Other anticipated highlights include a special feature in which classic films of the silent era will be given a new lease of life with fresh musical accompaniment.
On Saturday March 19th, Fritz Lang's groundbreaking 1927 movie Metropolis will be screened with music by Martin Matalon of Argentina, who adapted his score for the restored version of the film last year.
J'accuse, the 1919 film by French pioneer Abel Gance, will be given a new soundtrack by Reza Namavar and guitarist Gary Lucas.
Elsewhere at the festival, people can enjoy music by Taiwan's Pei-Yu Shi, Irish composer Jennifer Walshe and Elena Mendoza of Spain.
Several musicians will be performing in Berlin for the first time during MaerzMusik, such as American-Japanese composer Ken Ueno and Dutch pianist Ralph van Raat.
Michael Nyman's musical take on A Sixth Part of the World, the acclaimed 1926 documentary by Russian film-maker Dziga Vertov, will close the event on Sunday March 27th.
Tickets for the MaerzMusik events are individually priced and range from EUR6.50 to EUR35 (GBP5.40 and GBP29.30).
