Composer Wlad Marhulets Commissioned to Write Oratorio in a Tribute to Poland's Presidency in the EU and the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Czeslaw Milosz

The Borderland Foundation commissions a young composer Wlad Marhulets to write an Oratorio. The Oratorio will be a celebration of Poland's Presidency in the European Union as well as the 100th anniversary of the birth of Czeslaw Milosz.



    NEW YORK, NY, February 25, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A New York-based composer Wlad Marhulets is being commissioned by the Borderland Foundation to compose an Oratorio. The piece will be a celebration of Poland's Presidency in the European Union as well as a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Nobel Prize winner poet Czeslaw Milosz. The premiere of the Oratorio will take place on June 30th 2011 in Krasnogruda (Poland), as a part of a special event titled European Agora.

Wlad Marhulets is a young Polish composer studying at Juilliard School (New York) with one of contemporary music's most distinguished composers, John Corigliano. Wlad is a recipient of numerous awards (such as Morton Gould ASCAP 2010 Award) and scholarships (ASCAP Foundation Scholarship). The key works composed by Wlad Marhulets include Concerto for Klezmer Clarinet (commissioned by David Krakauer, premiered by him and Detroit Symphony cond. Leonard Slatkin in 2009), Dybbuk for String Quartet (in repertoire of Kronos Quartet), Piano Concerto (commissioned by Marina Baranova, to be premiered in 2012).

The Oratorio commission comes from the Borderland Foundation and the Borderland Center for Arts, Cultures, and Nations. The piece will be scored for two soloists (soprano and tenor), choir and chamber orchestra. The clarinet part will be performed by acclaimed clarinetist David Krakauer. The premiere of the Oratorio will take place on June 30th, 2011. On this day, admirers of the work of Czeslaw Milosz will come to Krasnogruda to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the poet, as well as the commencement of Poland's Presidency in the European Union. The concert will be the finale of European Agora. It will be attended by EU President Herman van Rompuy, EU Parliament President Jerzy Buzek, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite, and Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski. The process of composition is being filmed by a New York based director Sarah Choi as a part of documentary film about Wlad Marhulets. The film will be released in the summer of 2011.
