DUSSELDORF, GERMANY, March 23, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- One of the biggest annual sporting events in Dusseldorf is due to take place on Sunday May 8th.
The Metro Group Marathon attracts a diverse group of athletes each year, with thousands of people lining up to test their running skills in the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia.
It is among the quickest and most scenic road races in Germany, as the course runs straight through the city centre and provides competitors with spectacular views of the River Rhine.
Runners traversing the 42.195-kilometre route also pass the Media Harbour area and see their powers of endurance tested on the world-famous Konigsallee - the picturesque central boulevard known for its shops and landscaped canal.
A final sprint along the Rhine promenade completes the marathon course, with athletes invited to relax with a glass of water or a cool beer in the Old Town after they cross the line.
The deadline for registration is Sunday April 24th and all participants are required to pay a fee of EUR70 (GBP61.10). However, those who confirm their entry before Thursday March 31st will only be charged EUR60.
On the day of the marathon, adult runners traditionally start at 09:30 local time.
Refreshment stops are positioned at regular intervals of roughly five kilometres along the course, providing competitors with plenty of water, energy drinks and sponges to keep them cool.
The weather can be quite hot in Dusseldorf at this time of year, so runners are advised to start drinking water from an early stage.
