LAS VEGAS, NV, March 28, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. David Aplan, a Las Vegas braces expert, used National Nutrition Month as a springboard to discuss the importance of diet and nutrition on the outcome of orthodontic treatment with his patients.
March is National Nutrition Month, a nutrition education and information campaign sponsored annually by the American Dietetic Association since 1980. NNM recommends a well-balanced diet filled with whole grains, fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, low-fat dairy and lean protein for health and wellness.
"Since teeth are anchored in the jaw bones, getting the calcium and vitamin D needed to keep bones healthy allows for effective and permanent realignment of teeth," says Alpan, a Las Vegas orthodontics specialist.
Good nutrition, in combination with proper oral hygiene, wards off cavities that can form around orthodontic hardware and keeps tooth enamel strong, preventing the unattractive discoloring of the tooth around the bracket.
"I always recommend patients completely avoid foods like candy and soda, and use caution when eating hard, crunchy or sticky foods because they can damage orthodontic appliances and braces, bend wires, require extra visits for repairs and even set back treatment time," says Alpan, a Las Vegas orthodontist.
Braces do not give patients a free pass to boycott crunchy vegetables and fruits. Patients can incorporate crunchy vegetables into their diet by slicing them thinly, steaming vegetables or adding fruit and vegetables to a smoothie.
"Avoiding essential nutrients in a healthy diet would completely undermine the ultimate goal," says the Las Vegas braces provider.
