How are women working in and changing the maritime industry? That's the topic of a free WorkBoat.com webinar Wednesday, May 25. Register and receive free membership in WorkBoat.com. The webinar is part of the WorkBoat Professional Series.

PORTLAND, ME, May 21, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Less than 20 years ago, it was hard for women to find jobs on workboats and bluewater vessels. But today, women can be found in just about every aspect of the commercial marine industry.

How are women working in and changing the industry? That's the topic of a free WorkBoat.com webinar on Wednesday, May 25. Registration is now open for the webinar, which will be held from 1 p.m.-2 p.m. EST (noon-1 p.m. CST). To register, visit www.WorkBoat.com.

Participants in the webinar will include: David Krapf, editor in chief of WorkBoat magazine (co-moderator) and WorkBoat.com; Pamela Glass, WorkBoat's Washington Correspondent (co-moderator); Capt. Joy Manthey, chaplain, Kirby Inland Marine; and, Elizabeth Christman, Association of Maryland Pilots.

"Women are breaking the industry's gender stereotypes and 'splashing' through the water ceiling," said Krapf. "Women can be seen everywhere in the industry now, from deckhands, pilots, shipyard workers, and towboat captains, to military and federal government positions. They also hold positions at maritime academies, and own their own workboat-related companies."

Krapf expects the webinar to cover a number of topics and issues. What's it like for a woman to work on a vessel with a male-dominated crew? What's it like for men to have a female crewmember? What are the rewards and the pitfalls? Are companies actively recruiting women? How has the culture and atmosphere on boats changed over the years? What's the best advice for women considering a maritime career?

This webinar topic will be explored further in the July cover story of WorkBoat magazine.

Each registrant for the webinar receives a free membership in www.WorkBoat.com.
