The European Commission Moves to a Low-Carbon Economy Using Insulating Luxasolar Window Films

    SINT-NIKLAAS, BELGIUM, May 25, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In the building of the European Commission, DG Environment in Brussels, where the climate change and Kyoto departments reside, 2.300m2 of Luxasolar window films have been installed. With its "Roadmap for moving to a competitive low-carbon economy in 2050" the European Commission is looking at cost-efficient ways to make the European economy more climate-friendly and less energy-consuming. By 2050, Europe could cut most of its greenhouse gas emissions. Clean technologies are the future for Europe's economy. The Luxasolar window films offer the opportunity to save energy, reduce costs and increase your comfort. The warmth is kept outside in summer and inside in winter. After the installation of Luxasolar tests, were executed in the building of the European Commission by the independent Engineering Bureau Attentia, showing temperature drops up to 8.1 degrees C.

The sun's heat can cause high internal temperatures. This excessive heat results in a low thermal comfort level and increased cooling costs. Luxasolar has a high solar heat reflection and low warmth absorption, which results in temperature drops up to 10 degrees C. As the air conditioning system has to operate considerably less, this leads to savings in air conditioning consumption up to 25%.

In winter the foil reflects the interior heat that usually goes lost through large window panes back into the room, and so savings on the fuel costs of up to 30% can be achieved. The thermal insulation of the existing glazing is considerably improved : after the installation of Luxasolar the 5.8 W/m2K U value a of single pane glazing gets improved to 2.5 W/m2, the 2.9 W/m2K of double pane glazing to 1.6 W/m2K, and the 1.1 W/m2K of HR+ glazing to 0.97 W/m2K.

At the site of GlaxoSmithKline in France the challenge was to obtain the most constant internal temperature, warm in winter and cool in summer, without any loss of internal light and a transparent appearance. They decided to have 7.000m2 of Luxasolar window films installed to the inside of their glazing. This resulted in an annual heating gain of 1.402.566 kWh and a reduction of the electricity consumption of 1.601.006 kWh.

So, the existing glazing is upgraded without the cost of new windows and without any drilling or breaking, offering an energy efficiency retrofit application. These energy-savings and CO2-reductions result in an increased profitability, affecting building-owners and tenants, facility managers, private and public Energy Service Companies (ESCOs)...

Luxasolar assists her partners (among which the Belgian public ESCO "FEDESCO") through her information network, such as the 'Energy Saving Simulation Program'. This software program calculates the effect of Luxasolar on heating and cooling costs in existing buildings.
