PHUKET, THAILAND, June 03, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The programme is part of Peppies for Possums which will look to plant hundreds of peppermint trees as these are the main food source consumed by the animal, making up 95% of their diet.
Western Ringtail Possums have seen a population decline of 90% and are under serious risk of even further reductions due primarily to urban developments which have encroached onto their territory, attacks by predators and disease carried by domestic pets.
Peppermint trees are also struggling to survive due to unknown reasons but there is now a lack of food and the plantings it's hoped will help to improve the food supply. Other tree planting days will additionally be held with various environmental organisations including river care planting next to the Sabina River organised by Busselton Nats Club.
Plantings will take place on 5th, 19th and 23rd June and visitors staying in a Busselton hotel on any of those days can come along to take part as all the groups are hoping for volunteers who can provide assistance.
Lek Boonlert, marketing head at DirectRooms.com, commented: "Hotels in the area are going to be filling up with people looking to save the possums and help out within the community. Bookings should be made in plenty of time to be assured availability."
