There are also four winter sports that include cross-country skiing, show shoeing, skating, and alpine skiing.

The Special Olympics World Games has been a continuing tradition since 1968 when Eunice Kennedy Shriver first had the idea of Olympic Games for those with intellectual disabilities. Her goal was "to create a world that is not dominated by those who are excluded, but by those who are included."

The Special Olympics Hellas began as a non-profit educational and sports association for Greeks with intellectual disabilities in 1987.
