Breast Sagging: Causes and Remedies

Surveys show that about 70% of women are unhappy with their breasts, and with age it is increasingly sagging that makes them unhappy.

LOS ANGELES, CA, July 14, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Surveys show that about 70% of women are unhappy with their breasts, and with age it is increasingly sagging that makes them unhappy. There are many myths surrounding breast sagging, but what really causes breasts to sag? And once they have begun to sag, how can you combat sagging?

Causes of Breast Sagging

The main cause of breast sagging is just gravity, the most implacable force in the universe. Over time, gravity stretches out breast tissue. However, the speed at which your breasts sag can be increased by:

- Pregnancy
- Larger breasts
- Breast composition (breast with more fat tissue sag more quickly than breasts with fibrous tissue)
- Poor skin quality
- Changes to breast tissue with age
- Smoking

Contrary to popular perception, however, breastfeeding does not contribute to breast sagging. A 2007 study conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons showed that breastfeeding, the number of children breastfed, and the duration of breastfeeding were not significantly correlated with the degree of sagging.

Do You Need Treatment?

Breast sagging is a cosmetic issue, and does not require treatment for health reasons. However, your breast sagging may require treatment if it causes you significant insecurity or impacts your self-esteem on a daily basis. If you feel uncomfortable undressing in front of a partner or at the gym, if you are unable to find clothes that make you feel attractive or even "normal," or if you are constantly worried people will notice your breasts, then you may want to consider taking steps to address your breast sagging.

Treatment Steps for Breast Sagging

Many women think immediately of a breast lift to correct breast sagging, but there are many steps to take before deciding on breast surgery.

First, get a professional bra fitting. According to professionals, about four-fifths of women are wearing an incorrectly-sized bra. If you get a professional fitting, it can help you get a bra that will make your breasts look their best, helping you to look good and feel confident in clothes.

Talk to your partner. The same surveys that indicate 70% of women are unhappy with their breasts also indicate that most men are happy with the breasts of their wife or girlfriend, so the chances are you will be reassured.

Try different styles. If in the past you have always dressed to call attention to your breasts, perhaps you should try wearing outfits that emphasize other aspects of your appearance. You may be delighted to discover how attractive your legs, arms, face, and eyes can make you feel.

If these steps don't work, then it may be time to consider a breast lift. Remember to take into account:

- Scarring
- Risk of complications, including a poor cosmetic result
- Positive results may not last
- Cost

If you still think a breast lift is right for you, then you should talk to several plastic surgeons to ensure you have found the right one for you before committing to the procedure.
