PHUKET, THAILAND, July 14, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The marathon is a member of AIMS (the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races), an organisation whose members include over 300 of the leading distance races in the world.
The first Reykjavik Marathon was held in 1984, and 214 runners participated in it. Today, the Reykjavik Marathon sees approximately 11,000 participants annually, with over 1,000 runners from other countries. World renowned runners who have taken part in past years include Frank Shorter, Waldemar Cierpinski and Stefano Baldini.
Races which are held on competition day include the 42.2 km marathon, a 21.1 km half marathon, a 10 km timed race, a relay race of 42.4 km with two to four runners, a three kilometre fun run and a children's run. The relay race was only brought in last year for the first time, and will follow the same course as the individual marathon.
The marathon, half marathon, timed races and 10 km race will begin in the morning between 08:00 and 10:00. The exact times will be provided closer to the event. The time limit for both the relay race and marathon is six hours. The Awards Ceremony will be held on the 22nd of August.
Given the increasing popularity of this event it is worth booking a Reykjavik hotel room in advance. There are a number of hotels in close proximity to the event suitable for both travelling groups and individuals.
It is possible to register for the marathon online until the 17th of August at 16:00, and at the Reykjavik EXPO until the 19th of August at 19:00.
