DALLAS, TX, July 17, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A new method for breast augmentation that's available is called fat grafting. This method allows the woman to have her own fat used for implantation rather than using saline or silicone breast implants.
Fat transfer from one body part to the breast involves two procedures: harvesting and then injecting. Once the fat is harvested, the cells are processed for transplantation, ensuring that the fat obtained is safe.
Though many precautions are taken to make sure that the transplantation is safe for the patient, there are issues of concern. A major concern among many plastic surgeons is how much fat is needed to enlarge the breast to the desired size. Fat cells must be over-injected to compensate for any cell death that may occur. In addition, there is concern over the fact that fat grafts may obscure readings on mammograms or may be mistaken for breast cancer.
Furthermore, transplanted fat cells often do not survive long term, as they may be absorbed into the body, liquefy, form cysts or calcify. If this happens, those who have received breast augmentation through this method will likely lose some volume in their breasts and develop some lumps.
Any breast augmentation procedure has its pros and cons, but specifically with fat grafting, the side effects cannot easily be ignored. Dr. Vasdev Rai of the Cosmetic Surgical Center in Dallas, Texas advises patients to stick with the tried and true traditional breast augmentation methods.
Dr. Rai says, "Because fat grafting is a relatively new technique, there is still a lot we don't know. We are not sure of the long term effects, and the patient may have to come in for additional procedures if the fat transferred turns into lumps or if her breast volume decreases."
Dr. Rai, along with many other board certified plastic surgeons, like to stick with the proven methods of breast augmentation. This way, the patient will still achieve her desired outcome and any questions and issues that arise can be confidently explained.
