LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND, August 04, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui has been translated and adapted by Liverpool playwright Stephen Sharkey for the stage.
His new production of the Bertolt Brecht satire will be performed at the Liverpool Playhouse from September 30th to October 22nd 2011.
"It's 1930s Chicago and as the Great Depression hits the city's fortunes, small time boss Arturo strikes a deal and makes a killing. Soon his shadow looms from the markets to the docks," explained the organisers in a statement.
Brecht's original was published in 1941 after being written by the dramatist over a three-week period while in exile in Finland.
The German writer's story is a parody of Adolf Hitler and each of the characters has a real-life counterpart. For instance, Emanuele Giri represents Hermann Goring and Dogsborough is Paul von Hindenburg.
Tickets range between GBP12 and GBP21, with performances taking place from Monday to Saturday at 19:30 BST. Thursday and Saturday matinees are scheduled for 13:30 and 14:00 respectively.
An audio-described show is planned on October 20th.
