The LASIK Process

Your ophthalmologist will be involved in every step of the process to ensure your comfort and amazing results.

Your Initial LASIK Consultation

Before deciding to undergo LASIK vision correction, it is necessary to have a complete eye exam performed by an experienced ophthalmologist. The eye exam will include a vision test to determine your prescription and several tests to make sure you do not have any eye conditions or diseases that may negatively affect your LASIK surgery.

Your eye exam will tell your ophthalmologist exactly how to design your LASIK surgery to meet your needs. Every patient has unique needs for vision correction. LASIK can accommodate these needs and correct several refractive errors such as:

- Farsightedness
- Nearsightedness
- Astigmatism
- Presbyopia

You may not be a candidate for LASIK if you have an eye disease, are under the age of 18, or have a prescription outside the treatable range. If you are not a candidate for LASIK, your ophthalmologist will discuss other vision correction options with you.

The LASIK Surgery

Before the LASIK surgery is performed, your ophthalmologist will numb your eyes with special anesthetic eye drops. You will also be given a medication designed to help you relax throughout your procedure. A retainer will be placed on your eyes to keep them open and prevent you from blinking.

Once you are comfortable and your eyes are numb, your ophthalmologist will create a flap in your cornea. The flap will stay attached to your eye on one side and will be gently pulled back exposing the area of the cornea that needs to be reshaped.

A computer-controlled laser reshapes the inner portion of the cornea to improve your vision. After your cornea is reshaped, the flap is put back in its original position and will heal naturally. LASIK will drastically improve your vision. Most patients experience 20/20 vision or better.

Follow-up Appointments After LASIK

Your ophthalmologist will schedule a couple of follow-up appointments with you to monitor your recovery. The number of follow-up appointments your ophthalmologist will schedule depends on how your procedure went and your medical history.
