When the Mets announced that they were hosting this event, 1st Class Medical jumped right on the opportunity to take support the cause. "COPD is a horrible disease and we want to do whatever we can to find a cure to save millions. We have a ton of patients that have this disease and it's sad to hear their stories on how it's ruining their lives, we want to support any foundation that is willing to help find a cure!" said Cory Luckner, Vice President of 1st Class Medical. Cory Luckner was accompanied with his 2 partners Scott Middleton and Caleb Umstead.
COPD affects approximately 24 million Americans but only 12 million are diagnosed. COPD is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. and the only chronic disease growing in mortality. Bob Mandt was one of the unfortunate people with COPD. He spent over 50 years working for the Mets and was a very important member of their family. Bob started as a ticket seller before the team played its first game in 1962. He continued to rise up the ranks to become Vice President of Stadium Operations and later Vice President for Purchasing and Special Projects. He was able to experience the 1969 and 1986 World Championships.
The 1st Class Medical crew was able to ride on the COPD Shuttle: Journey to the Center of the Lungs, a 20-seat motion simulator ride that takes you on a virtual journey through the lungs to see how smoking harms the lungs. "After watching that video, I can't seem to understand how people with this addiction can continue to smoke. It is horrible to see what affects of cigarette smoking can do to a persons body," Scott Middleton, President of 1st Class Medical, said.
