CHESTER, ENGLAND, September 22, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Google announced recently that it is launching a trial program in Liverpool to enable small businesses to maximize their online presence. "This is great news," says Jesse Young CEO of the Per DM Group, one of the UK's largest outsource sales companies. "It is the kind initiative that we need to see more of from large companies."
As Katherine Rushton wrote in the Business section of The Daily Telegraph: "Google is to throw its weight behind a scheme to help Britain's small businesses grow online, starting with companies in Liverpool." Google will be offering about 1500 businesses advice on building websites and also assisting those companies who are already established online on how to maximize their search terms.
Per DM Group which has over 100 small independent businesses in its group see the great potential in hooking up with the search engine giant. "To have this resource available will be invaluable to the development of business in general," Jesse Young goes on to say. It appears that local developers will be invited to share new code Google have developed, specifically for this program, at a series of "Hackathons".
Matt Brittin, managing director of Google UK said; "That small businesses with an Internet presence were growing at four times the rate of those without a website, but that many of the companies that had not launched online were put off because they thought it was 'too complex and complicated'.
Per DM sees the compelling argument for being online. "All our companies have an online presence," said their CEO Jesse Young. "Without a website a business has no visibility online and can lose out on potential income or new opportunities when customers are searching on the web."
If the trial is successful Google intend to roll the program out across the UK to other "entrepreneurial" cities in Britain. Although how Google would measure which cities are "entrepreneurial" or not has still to be determined. "One can see the backlash if Leeds was not considered as "entrepreneurial" as say Manchester," says Jesse. "PerDM view all areas of Britain as being equally entrepreneurial and encourage and support start ups wherever possible."
Cynically in some sectors this scheme has been viewed as the latest stage in Google's charm offensive as it combats accusations that it has become too "powerful and predatory".
Matt Brittin counters this by saying: "We're coming to spend a significant amount of time working with people in a community and helping people make the most of the Internet."
The Per DM Group believe that by utilising the services of such a global giant, no matter their motives, is an opportunity not to be missed.
