And now a new survey, by cloud security provider Westcoastcloud, shows that one in three children in the UK under the age of ten own a mobile phone, with one in ten owning a smartphone.

The study of 2,000 parents of children aged ten and under showed nearly 20% of parents bought their child a phone as a result of 'pestering'. Parents felt most comfortable buying a mobile phone for their children once they were aged ten or over.

Half of the parents surveyed owned a smartphone of their own, with 15% admitting to regularly allowing their child to use their mobile phone.

The survey also revealed that 68% of parents would buy a smartphone for their ten year old child simply in order to 'keep tabs on them', in other words because it enabled them to keep track of children while they were out of the house.
