Spanish Bullfighting Season Ends with Blinded Matador

Book Espana reports highlights and statistics from the 2011 bullfighting season which ended last Sunday. Here is an update about the shocking incident last week where a matador lost his eye sight and got paralyzed down the left side of his face.

LONDON, ENGLAND, October 19, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Book Espana has found that there are 693 active matadors in Spain during the 2011 bullfighting season and 2582 aspiring matadors. It appears the amount of bullfighters has increased slightly in 2011 compared to 2010, even if bullfighting in Barcelona has ended recently, mainly due to political reasons.

This year Spain has held 648 traditional bullfights, 130 bullfights with the matador riding on a horseback and 1070 bullfights with younger bulls. It appears about 12 500 bulls has been killed in Spanish bullfights during the 2011 season, while zero matadors has been killed in Spain this year.

However, it is far from risk free with bullfighting and eight humans have been seriously/severely injured this season.

The latest incident happened to matador Juan Jose Padilla. He was stabbed by the horn of a bull going through his head last week in Zaragoza. Book Espana can reveal the matador appears to survive the grizzly attack from a tempered bull, but his eye sight on the left eye is gone and Juan Jose Padilla also got his face paralyzed. Still, it seems he wants to return to the bullring again. Juan Jose Padilla told his manager shortly after the incident "Don't cancel any of my South American contracts".

The most successful matador in Spain this season is Jose Maria Manzanares. He is a bullfighter from Alicante, finished the season in the first position. Jose Maria Manzanares has been active in 58 bullfights, winning most awards of all matadors in 2011. He has won a total of 117 ears and 8 tails this season.

The Spanish bullfighting season finished on Sunday last week and will re-start in March 2012 again. During the Spanish winter, many matadors go to South America to perform.
