INDIANAPOLIS, IN, November 02, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- After receiving a mastectomy for breast cancer, opting to have breast reconstructive surgery has a low risk of complications. In addition, it does not cause any delays in cancer treatment.
This study eases any past concerns regarding the potential of complications and other problems after receiving a mastectomy.
Researchers of this study followed women who have undergone breast reconstruction immediately after a mastectomy. Over a period of ten years, 170 women chose to have immediate reconstruction, including 13 women who've decided to have the reconstruction surgery in both breasts.
Out of the group of 170 women, there were only 15 complications. Eight patients' complications lead to delays in their cancer treatment while 15 women had recurrent breast cancer during their follow-ups. This is a rate of about 8.8 percent.
Women who opt to have immediate reconstructive surgery experience some advantages like improved cosmetic outcomes, shorter recovery time, and decreased costs. Also, having the reconstructive surgery immediately after a mastectomy offers a vital way of coping with the recovery process.
Dr. Joseph Fata of the Renaissance Plastic Surgery Center explains why this helps in the recovery process, "After mastectomy, women have to cope with the worries about having cancer and have also had damage to their self-esteem. Immediate reconstruction gives them something to be positive and hopeful about, which can assist in their recovery."
The study's researchers and authors hope that its results will assure both women and surgeons that having reconstructive surgery immediately after a mastectomy is not dangerous, that in fact, it offers some benefits.
