Breast Implant Options

Deciding what type of breast implant you will receive during your breast augmentation procedure is very important.

HOUSTON, TX, December 30, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Deciding what type of breast implant you will receive during your breast augmentation procedure is very important. There are vast differences between each breast implant option. While each has a silicone shell, what's inside is where the difference is. There are two types of breast implants: saline breast implants and silicone breast implants. Each has been around and in use since the 1960s.

Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants are filled with saline, a sterile salt water solution natural to your body. Some of the differences from silicone breast implants and benefits include:

- Filled to the correct volume after the breast implant has been placed inside the breast pocket
- Volume can be adjusted to correct size difference in breasts
- Because the breast implant is placed unfilled, incisions are much smaller than they are with silicone breast implants
- Leaks are easily detected because the saline is safely absorbed by your body
- Less expensive that silicone breast implants

One of the more common side effects with saline breast implants is that rippling can be felt or seen. However, this rarely occurs if the breast implant is placed behind the chest muscle.

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone breast implants were briefly restricted from use by the Food and Drug Administration over safety concerns. However, decades of research and an improved product have shown that these fears. Differences and benefits include:

- Silicone breast implants are generally preferred because of the natural look and feel of silicone
- Submammary placement is generally better if done with silicone breast implants
- Come pre-filled from the manufacturer and require a larger incision, but allows for results that are predictable
- Silicone will not leave the breast pocket if there is a leak, which can make it difficult to know if there is a problem with the breast implant
- MemoryGel implants by Mentor are often used because of the way the gel holds together and resembles natural breast tissue
- Women who are thin or small may be better candidates for silicone than saline breast implants

Each breast implant has benefits and drawbacks. The only way to know for sure which breast implant is best for you is to schedule a consultation with a board-certified breast augmentation surgeon.
