Will an Ultrabook Make Four?

Having a computer is certainly the norm today - but what about having four computers? Well, start counting. You've probably got a desktop computer at work, a laptop at home and a smartphone. You're already at three, so is four far behind?

The tablet computers introduced two years ago (the iPhone was originally released in 2010) started the popularity and probability of that fourth computer. The industry has been trying to provide us with a computer that is easy to carry around for quite a while. Laptops provide something we can carry, but not easily. Simply put - they get heavy when carried around an airport and are awkward to balance on your knees. We need a computer that moves easily from room to room in our homes and one that goes with us to business meetings and sales calls. We need wireless access with connection to the Internet, home and office. The tablets do provide this, but they weren't designed for the business world. Tablet computers are really large smartphones (without the phone part) designed for consumer use by providing an easy interface to games, movies, books, etc . The business world needs a machine with more power and a longer battery life, with an easy interface to corporate systems, collaboration, the Internet, etc. The ultrabook was designed to a mobile computer for the business world.

Intel defined the ultrabook in mid-2011, and actually what they defined is a small laptop. Ultrabooks are thin computers (less than 21 mm thick) and light (weighing under three pounds) and have an ultra-fast start up (immediate when the machine is turned on). They run for a long time (5 - 8 hours of battery life), and have the same easy interface as the tablet machines. The other pluses for the business world relate to the "small laptop" description. Ultrabooks are another version of the computers used in business for decades. They run the operating systems business know well, not iOS and Android which dominate the tablet industry. Business users can stay with Windows and IT departments can use both the system software and development tools they're used to. Much of the software running on laptops can be easily adopted for Ultrabooks.
