EDISON, NJ, February 11, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- French manufacturing company Poly Implants Prostheses has made headlines as part of a major public health care scandal since late 2011.
It's no wonder, as their breast implants are more prone to rupture than other brand due to the type of silicone used in its production. Unsurprisingly, while industrial grade silicone is cheaper than medical grade silicone, it is not suitable for medical use. PIP implants were inserted into the chests of 300,000 women in Europe and South American and were smuggled into 65 countries.
The French government has urged the 30,000 French women who received PIP implants to have them removed as a preventive measure and even offered to foot the bill. The reason for taking the implants out is because an estimated 1,000 women have already experienced a ruptured implant. As of late, France is the only country to take action in removing the implants.
"Removing implants is a simple procedure," said Dr. Shain Cuber, a NJ plastic surgeon. "But when an implant has ruptured, it presents challenges. The tissue around the rupture can become irritated and inflamed, which can cause painful irregularities in the breast."
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration questioned the way PIP implants were manufactured in 2000, when they began requiring implant companies to apply to sell their products in the U.S. The easy deflation of the implant and the type of silicone used were the two largest reasons the FDA banned PIP implants in the U.S.
"The FDA gets a lot of grief, and their approval of silicone implants was long, but the result was safer implants," said the breast lift and tummy tuck specialist.
A handful of American did receive PIP implants by traveling overseas because it was more affordable and they could simultaneously receive other procedures not yet approved in the states.
"Before considering surgery in another country, patients need to exercise extreme caution," the expert on rhinoplasty and liposuction said. "Only Allergan and Mentor implants are used in our office because they have good safety records and warranties."
