COPIAGUE, NY, February 16, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Long Island Exchange Columnist Cognac Wellerlane attended the January 16th performance of "Destiny Rising" at The Joyce Theater in New York City. The event was put together by The New York City Dancers Alliance's choreographers and alumni. The highlight of the evening was the attention given to the foundation's scholarship fund, set to benefit future dancers across the nation.
The scholarship organization surpassed its goal of raising a million dollars in 2011. Instead, the fund raised $3 million and benefited fifty different young recipients who have plans to pursue performance-related majors in a university or secondary school. Some of the recipients are set to become dance and theater students.
Wellerlane spoke with the New York City Dance Alliance Founder Joe Lanteri, who traveled the country for the last eighteen years in hopes of meeting talented young dancers. Lanteri took the organization to another step to promote education. He later thanked Wellerlane for helping to spread the word and instructed those wishing to donate to visit www.nycdance.com under the foundation tab.
The organization has been extremely successful at providing financial means of pursuing the arts to those with exceptional talent. Lanteri also informed Wellerlane of his plans to incorporate more Broadway into the foundation's events. Wellerlane also spoke to the organization's managing director, who was a former dancer.
"He's a pretty great guy," the director spoke of Lanteri. She also discussed with Wellerlane her transition to the administrative side of dancing and the foundation's goal to create a New-York-based charity with national reach. "I've been privileged to be on this journey for eighteen years," she concluded.
Some of the organization's sponsors include Radio City Music Hall and Dance Magazine. Two upcoming events, Bright Lights Shining Stars and the National Season Finale, will take place over the summer. The later will be designed for colleges to recruit dancers and a Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented.
