COPIAGUE, NY, February 19, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Long Island Exchange Columnist Cognac Wellerlane attended the Designer Forum New York located at Flatotel in Midtown, Manhattan. The event was a part of a menswear tradeshow designed to attract retailers, buyers, designers, distributors, and vendors to one gathering. Each annual designer forum is sponsored by the Custom Tailors and Designers Association.
The organization was founded in 1880 in Columbus, Ohio and is considered the oldest trade organization in the United States. It deals with a collective effort towards design, pattern making, fitting, cutting, and tailoring. Five years ago an educational program was implemented to benefit members and prospective members.
The Flatotel's larger ballrooms and floor of suites were reserved for the event's exhibits, including a display from the Antique Jewel Box. The company is acclaimed for its collection of a hundred years of antique, handpicked cufflinks. Wellerlane spoke with the president of the company, Caroline Finberg.
"We really do stand out," admitted Finberg, "I've been doing this for over forty-five years... I'm a third-generation antique dealer." Finberg informed Wellerlane of her decision to focus on men's jewelry because there wasn't much out there for it at the time.
"I like the intimacy of this," continued Finberg, commenting on the forum's warm atmosphere. Finberg spoke to Wellerlane about the custom cufflinks with themes, which include baseball and cigars. Those seeking more information can visit antinquejewlbox.com.
Wellerlane also spoke with Mitch Gambert from the Mel Gambert Shirt Line. The company is run from Newark, New Jersey and has been a member of the Custom Tailors and Designers Association since 1982. Gambert is a board member of the organization.
"My grandfather started it in 1933," spoke Gambert of the company, which can be accessed at gambertshirts.com. He explained to Wellerlane the significance of a shirt, stating that a man's wardrobe is usually picked around what shirt he's wearing. Shirt collars play an important role; stockier men typically prefer closed collars, while lankier men tend to dress with the collar open.
