The urgency of the problem presented by texting while driving cannot be overstated. Numerous studies have shown that texting while driving can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. Some studies, such as one conducted by Professor David Strayer, of the University of Utah, found that texting while driving is even more dangerous than drunk driving, doubling the likelihood of a collision. The Texas Transportation Institute recently concluded that reaction times slowed from one-to-two seconds with no texting activity, to three-to-four seconds while texting. What's more, it makes no difference whether the driver is sending or reading a text.

"Common sense dictates that it is dangerous to take your eyes off the road while operating a motor vehicle - even for a few seconds. If your attention is not focused on the roadway and what is going on around you, tragedy can strike in the blink of an eye," according to Stephen W. Stewart, founder of The Stewart Law Firm.

- Turn your phone off or switch to silent mode before you get in the car

- Set up a special message to tell callers that you are driving or sign up for a service that offers this

- Pull over if you need to make or receive a call

- Ask a passenger to make the call for you if you need to reach someone
