LONDON, ENGLAND, March 21, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Virgin London Marathon, a British sporting institution that has become one of the world's biggest running events, returns to the capital on Sunday April 22nd.
Established in 1981, the marathon now attracts over 30,000 participants and roughly half a million spectators line the route to cheer on the runners each year.
Although the ballot for entry to this year's event is now closed, people can still head to London to offer encouragement and enjoy the famous festival atmosphere on the sidelines.
The 26.2-mile route begins south of the river at three separate points around Blackheath, before crossing the Thames and finishing in The Mall near Buckingham Palace.
On the way, athletes pass many of the city's most famous landmarks, including St Paul's Cathedral, the London Eye and Big Ben. They cross over the Thames at Tower Bridge.
For spectators, the best way to get around on marathon day is by using the London Underground and the Docklands Light Railway, as many roads in the centre of the capital will be closed.
People planning to attend the marathon can browse a large number of central London hotels at LateRooms.com, which recommends the Mint Hotel Westminster.
