/24-7PressRelease/ - April 13, 2007 - If you have been hurt on the job, steps you should take are as follows.

1. Report the injury—You need to report your injury to your employer immediately. If you are under 18, you should tell your parents or guardian as well. If your sickness or injury is something that developed over an extended period of time, tell your boss as soon as you think or find out that it was caused by your work.

2. Get emergency medical treatment if needed—Go to an emergency care facility immediately if you have a medical emergency. Your boss or employer may tell you where you should go to be treated. Inform the emergency room personnel that your injury or illness is job related.

3. Fill out a claim form and file it with your employer—Your employer must give you a workers' compensation claim form. Read and fill out the claim form, describing your illness or injury completely and accurately. Return the form to your employer right away to apply for your workers' compensation benefits and to avoid any possible problems. Make sure to keep a copy for your records.

4. Get good medical care for your illness or injury—You should get additional medical care to help you recover from your injury. You should be treated by a medical practitioner who is knowledgeable about your particular illness or injury. Tell the physician about your medical symptoms and the events at your job that you think caused them. Also explain your job and your work environment.

5. Contact an experienced Workers' Compensation attorney—To ensure you maximize your benefits; a good workers' compensation attorney will help you with the claims process and any appeal. Depending on the circumstances of your claim, you may also be entitled compensation for your injuries from a third party outside the workers' compensation system.
