Risks of Breast Augmentation

Every kind of surgery entails some level of risk for patients, and breast augmentation is no different.

GOLDEN, CO, March 22, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Every kind of surgery entails some level of risk for patients, and breast augmentation is no different. However, it's worth noting that serious complications after breast augmentation are rare. Furthermore, a good plastic surgeon will anticipate every potential side effect and be prepared to effectively address it if necessary.

Risks of Anesthesia
One of the forefront risks of any surgery is associated with anesthesia. In breast augmentation, your surgeon may use general anesthesia (putting you completely to sleep), or a combination of local anesthesia and sedation (leaving you somewhat conscious, but calm and comfortable).

General anesthesia involves rare, but sometimes fatal risks, including:

- Aspiration
- Allergic reaction
- Nausea or vomiting
- Increased blood pressure
- Increased heart rate

One out of 250,000 patients die every year from complications related to general anesthesia. If you already have a serious medical condition going into the surgery, your risk will be greater.

In contrast, local anesthesia is considered very safe. The risks of conscious sedation are limited to nausea, headache, vomiting, and sometimes unpleasant memories of the details of your surgery.

Surgical Risks
After your surgery, your breast surgeon will provide you with detailed instructions on what to do during your recovery process so you can limit the risk of complications. Some of these complications might include:

- Hematoma
- Seroma
- Blood clots
- Excessive scarring
- Implant rejection or extrusion
- Capsular contracture
- Infection

If you are a smoker, your chances of suffering from one or more of these side effects increases significantly. Smoking limits your skin's ability to heal, potentially leading to tissue death (necrosis). Your surgeon will ask you to quit smoking at least two weeks before your surgery.
The longer you abstain from smoking both before and after your surgery, the better and safer your results will be.

Cosmetic Complications
Some of the complications you may experience are not health-related, but strictly cosmetic in nature, such as:

- Rippling or wrinkling
- Symmastia
- Bottoming out
- Unsatisfactory results

The quality and longevity of your breast augmentation results will greatly depend upon how carefully your breast implants, incision type, and placement parameters are selected - and of course, how well the surgery itself is performed.

By working with a skilled and experienced breast augmentation surgeon, you can ensure that you receive the best possible treatment and are satisfied with the outcome.
