April is Proclaimed National Child Abuse Prevention Month

    PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA, April 14, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Each year the president of the United States, along with governors and other government officials, declares the month of April the National Child Abuse Prevention Month (NCAPM).

The first National Child Abuse Prevention Month was proclaimed in April 1983. Since then child abuse and neglect awareness activities have been promoted across the country during April of each year.

"Events like the NCAPM are a great opportunity to make our society more aware of this terrible pandemic and to remind us that our kids are our nation's future and keeping them safe from harm is key to making them successful, healthy, caring, productive adults," says Peter S. Pelullo, author of the new book "Betrayal and the Beast."

In his book Peter S. Pelullo focuses on his own journey as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and sexual predation. For many years he kept hidden and refused to face his own debilitating issues as a survivor of sexual predation--the shame, rage, multiple addictions, depression, and other influences that directly impacted his life. Finally, at the age of fifty-five, Peter S. Pelullo confronted the sexual abuse he endured as a child.

A frequent guest on the "Dr. Drew Show," Peter S. Pelullo says, "Today, almost thirty years after the first National Child Abuse Prevention Month was declared, the need to stop childhood sexual abuse is greater than ever as the number of children experiencing this type of trauma continues to rise at an alarming rate."

Peter S. Pelullo's concern for adult survivors of sexual child abuse led him to create the Let Go...Let Peace Come In Foundation, an international outreach program aimed at bringing victims to the recovery process. The foundation and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health are aligned in a common goal of preventing child sexual abuse and the harm and suffering it inflicts and improving treatment for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

"It is important that we unite to discuss and create a dialogue about this beast of sexual and physical abuse and predation," says Peter S. Pelullo. "Only together can we make a difference and help child and adult survivors of this monstrous, heinous crime as well as our own families because there is a significant chance that our children and grandchildren will marry sexual abuse survivors as adults and never know."

NCAPM's history began In 1974, when public concern for the safety and welfare of America's kids led to the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA). But with the alarming trend of child abuse and neglect continuing unabated, in 1983 Congress proclaimed the first National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The intention then, as it is today, was to promote awareness of the problem, support initiatives to prevent child abuse and neglect, and coordinate resources and activities to help families and communities reduce the likelihood of child maltreatment.

Child Abuse Prevention Month is coordinated out of the Office on Child Abuse and Neglect (OCAN), a part of the Children's Bureau within the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) at the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Peter S. Pelullo was the founder of Philly World Records and owner of a premiere recording studio in the '70s, where he worked with the Rolling Stones, Evelyn "Champagne" King, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, Cashmere, and Eugene Wilde. He is now an entrepreneur and financier focusing on technology startups. During his journey in recovery, he created the Let Go...Let Peace Come In Foundation, which supports adult victims of childhood sexual abuse throughout the world and is presently subsidizing trauma therapy sessions for a couple of the alleged victims from the Jerry Sandusky incidents at Penn State University.
