DULUTH, GA, April 20, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Janet L. Lindenfeld, Program Director for Gwinnett Technical College, has been named Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Speech Education. While inclusion in the Cambridge Who's Who Registry is an honor, only two male and two female members in each discipline are named professionals of the year. The Cambridge Who's Who selection committee chooses these special honorees based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements and leadership abilities.
Janet L. Lindenfeld has 39 years of experience in her field, with 13 years spent as a program director for Gwinnett Technical College. Her expertise is in speech, literature and drama education. Ms. Lindenfeld attended Michigan State University, where she was awarded a bachelor of arts in communication arts, and the University of Michigan, where she was awarded a master of arts in speech education. She began her teaching career in Michigan where she instructed students in English, theater and speech. Ms. Lindenfeld moved to Georgia in 1983 and was employed by Gwinnett County Public Schools. She taught at both Berkmar High School and Brookwood High School and, in addition to teaching English, helped to develop the theater arts program in both schools. In 1988, she joined Gwinnett Tech as an adjunct instructor for English and speech. In 1997, she was hired as a full-time speech instructor. From 2001 to 2005, she served as division director for arts and sciences. Currently, she is the program director for speech. In this capacity, she is responsible for training and evaluating instructors, conducting classes on public speaking, developing the curriculum and online courses, and reviewing reports. The speech program at Gwinnett Tech has grown dramatically over the past 10 years, and a speech textbook developed by Ms. Lindenfeld and adjunct speech instructor Penny Waddell, reflects the academic needs of Gwinnett Tech students and the increasing demands of the business world.
Ms. Lindenfeld owes her success to the role models she had throughout her education - which allowed her to watch what others did in certain situations and different styles - and to her own sense of humor. After retiring from her post, she plans to write a book, with a colleague, on her experiences in the teaching profession and how things have changed through the decades, especially in terms of how educators deal with students and parents. In her spare time, Ms. Lindenfeld enjoys performing and directing plays with various community and civic theater groups, traveling, baking and watching films. She supports several charities, but her favorites are Relay For Life, Doctors Without Borders, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, Children's Miracle Network, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, a hospice for cancer patients.
