TARZANA, CA, April 21, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Screenwriter couple Rhoda Jordan and Eric Shapiro ("Rule of Three") are working with writer-producer Dan McKinnon ("Missing William") on a new script tentatively titled "The Last Poet," a moving drama about a famous, cancer-ridden author who spends his final days writing what he's always wanted to: poetry.
McKinnon devised the screenplay's characters and scenario, and began developing a draft, prior to engaging Jordan and Shapiro as co-writers. Several years ago, the couple had given McKinnon feedback on an earlier work, and he was impressed with their notes. "We got on the phone and vowed someday, if the right project presented itself, we would work together. Here we are about 10 years later and this was that perfect opportunity," says McKinnon.
"Dan's an expert dramatist," Shapiro says. "He's terrific at tapping real emotion, and we were honored by the opportunity to collaborate with him on this."
Jordan and Shapiro, who got married in '04 and together created and produced "Rule of Three" (2010), presently have two other original screenplays under option. The first, "Girl Zero," about an apocalypse wherein the Earth's women are being threatened, is under option by Big Screen Entertainment Group ("Rule of Three"'s distributor), and being produced by Kimberley Kates. The other, "The Devoted," about the last day in the life of a suicide cult, is under option by filmmaker Richmond Riedel ("Target Practice"), and has been published in ebook form by Ravenous Shadows, the genre fiction line from New York Times Bestselling author John Skipp. Shapiro adapted the book version from the screenplay before getting Riedel's attention with the script.
McKinnon is presently completing post-production on "Missing William," which he produced with John Santilli and wrote the screenplay for. The emotional drama, about how a tragic accident reunites a pair of childhood sweethearts, stars Brandon Routh ("Superman"), Courtney Ford ("True Blood," "Parenthood"), Reid Scott (star of the upcoming HBO series "Veep" with Julia Louis-Dreyfus), and Spencer Grammer ("Greek"), and was directed by Kenn MacRae, the recent winner of the Australian equivalent of "Project Greenlight."
