New Case Study Published by Realityworks, Inc. Details Milwaukee Public Schools' Highly Successful Program to Reduce Teen Pregnancy - A Model for Urban Areas

    EAU CLAIRE, WI, April 25, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Realityworks, Inc. recently published a case study following a joint project between the United Way of Greater Milwaukee (UWGM) and Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS). The study, Teen Pregnancy Prevention in an Urban Area: The Milwaukee Project examines the joint actions of the community to make dramatic drops in adolescent pregnancies.

In 2008 the City of Milwaukee Health Department declared a goal of reducing teen pregnancies by
46 percent. The UWGM took on the task of making this goal a reality. They partnered with several organizations including MPS to implement a multi-faceted plan that spans all grade levels and reaches all students. This approach serves as a highly successful example that yielded dramatic results.

One of the first initiatives was to improve MPS' human growth and development curriculum. The curriculum is an opportunity to teach students real-world skills that will help them make smart choices about sex. Milwaukee followed a blue print to make dramatic results happen.

The Community-Based Approach Blue Print includes:

- Implementation of a school-based curriculum with lessons that build upon prior teachings
- Curriculum that spans across male and female students K-12
- Use of best practice methodologies like hands-on learning
- Obtaining community support and good communication
- Teacher training so each feels comfortable communicating the topic
- Engagement of other funding partners

Milwaukee has seen the teen pregnancy rate decline over the past three consecutive years. This last year saw the largest drop at 13.6 percent. Efforts are ongoing to reach the goal of a 46 percent decline by 2015.
