BRIGHTON, ENGLAND, May 09, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Due to run until Sunday May 27th, the latest incarnation of this popular annual event offers a typically varied programme of music, theatre, dance, film, debate and visual arts.
Veteran stage and screen actress Vanessa Redgrave was recruited as guest director for the festival's 2012 edition.
"This is a very gracious festival and it is a great honour to be asked to really be part of it," the star of films such as Girl, Interrupted and Atonement said earlier this year.
Andrew Comben, chief executive of Brighton Dome and Festival, added that Redgrave's directorship is set to "surprise, delight and provoke" when the festival gets underway.
The actress will appear in conversation with Guardian critic Michael Billington for the Bafta: My Life in Pictures event on Saturday May 5th.
Other highlights of the programme include a performance by Irish singer-songwriter James Vincent McMorrow and the Brighton Festival debut of acclaimed choreographer Matthew Bourne.
A variety of venues across Brighton are used to host festival events, including the Corn Exchange and Pavilion Theatre at Brighton Dome, as well as the Jubilee Library, St Mary's Church and Hove Park.
LateRooms.com offers a variety of last minute hotels that could appeal to festival-goers, including the Kemp Townhouse Hotel.
