HAYWARD, CA, May 16, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- California Small Business Day was first established in the year 2000 as a result of a unanimous vote in the California Assembly decreeing and honoring the contributions of Small Businesses to the State of California. Over the past decade the event has grown to a very popular and well-attended luncheon where Senators and Assembly members honor a small business owner from their district.
"I am very proud of our company's success and achievements and appreciate the recognition of our hard work," said Susan Karl, president of Annabelle Candy Co., Inc. "To be honored with this award is a testament to the commitment and hard work put forward by our entire company."
"We are proud to be part of The Hayward Community, where we have been making fine candy for almost 50 years!" said Annabelle Altshuler Block. "We are honored to receive this recognition."
"Annabelle Candy Company, Inc. is a shining example of the power of free enterprise and the opportunities it can create for America's doers and dreamers," said Michael Sweeney, Mayor of the City of Hayward. "Local businesses, large and small alike, are intricately woven into the fabric of our community. When businesses, such as Annabelle Candy Company, Inc., invest in the future of Hayward, those investments contribute immeasurably to Hayward's image as a good place to live, work and do business."
Annabelle Candy Co., Inc. is a third-generation family business founded 62 years ago in San Francisco, CA. The company was founded by Sam Altshuler, who arrived in the United States in 1917. He learned the art of candy making and after struggling for years finally achieved success with his Rocky Road candy bar. He named his business the "Annabelle Candy Company" after his daughter, Annabelle, who in 1971 took control of the company.
In 1972 the company acquired the Golden Nugget Company, makers of Big Hunk and Look candy bars and in 1978 the company acquired the Cardinet Company, makers of U-No and Abba Zaba candy bars. The Rocky Road in addition to the Big Hunk, Look, U-No and Abba Zaba candy bars are currently manufactured in their Hayward, CA factory and headquarters.
Annabelle Candy Company, Inc. continued to grow. Annabelle's son, Gary Gogol, managed operations of the business for many years, and her daughter Susan Karl, now manages the day-to-day operations of the company as President and CEO. What started as a family business continues today as one of the largest independently owned candy bar manufacturers in the United States.
