LEWES, DE, May 16, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Debra Puglisi Sharp, inspirational speaker and author, has been recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in victim advocacy.
Since 2000, Mrs. Puglisi Sharp has served as an inspirational public speaker for victim advocacy in an effort to end the silence that perpetuates destructive abuse cycles. It is her mission to help those who have been affected by disturbing events understand that there is hope in moving forward and that they are not defined by their grief. She encourages these individuals to talk freely about their pasts and gain the confidence in themselves to recognize that their suffering has not been in vain.
Mrs. Puglisi Sharp is driven to help the victims of violent crimes and rape, and the survivors of traumatic events, by a personal experience that occurred about 14 years ago. In the comfort of her own home, she became the victim of sexual assault and physical abuse, and later discovered that her husband was murdered. Although still attempting to come to terms with the devastation that she and her family experienced, Mrs. Puglisi Sharp shares her story with other victims so that they know they are not alone. She stands by the idea that education is empowerment, and has shared her story through the publishing of "Shattered: Reclaiming a Life Torn Apart by Violence," which is now required reading for victim courses offered at several colleges and universities throughout the United States. Mrs. Puglisi Sharp has been featured on the A&E Biography series "I Survived," and has made appearances on the Discovery Channel, "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and "20/20."
Mrs. Puglisi Sharp is a regular speaker with the Middle Atlantic-Great Lakes Organized Crime Law Enforcement Network. She also serves as Co-Chair of the Sexual Assault Network of Delaware and sits on the Criminal Justice Advisory Board for Wilmington University and the board of the National Coalition of Victims in Action.
This year, she was honored with a Woman of the Year Award by Delaware Tech and Community College. She has also been given a Special Courage Award by the United States Attorney General. Mrs. Puglisi Sharp was recently featured in Pro-Files Magazine. In the past, she has been highlighted in the "Top 101 Industry Experts" book and recognized as a Professional of the Year in Victim Advocacy.
Before Ms. Puglisi Sharp chose to reach out to other victims of trauma and abuse, she worked as a nurse, bringing comfort and care to those in hospice settings. She is a registered nurse through the Delaware Board of Nursing and holds an associate degree in nursing from Delaware Technical & Community College.
