SANTA CLARA, CA, May 19, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Cataract surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis and generally takes less than one hour. Your situation may be unique. This should be discussed with your cataract surgeon prior to your procedure. The following is a basic outline of what can be expected before, during and after the removal of your cataracts.
Before Cataract Surgery
Before your cataract surgery, you will need to be made sufficiently comfortable. Your cataract surgeon will need to numb the area and use eye drops to dilate your pupil. If you are nervous, uncomfortable, or if your surgeon deems it necessary, you may also be given a mild sedative prior to your procedure. These steps will help ensure your absolute comfort during your cataract surgery.
During Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery requires the removal of your cloudy lens. The most common method is to make a small incision in your eye through which a tiny probe can be inserted. This probe uses ultrasound waves to break up the cataract and remove the fragments with suction. A less common method is to make a larger incision and use surgical tools and suction to remove your lens. The method best for you will be determined by your cataract surgeon.
After your cataract has been removed, an artificial lens will be placed. These lenses, known as intraocular lenses or IOLs, will be calibrated to meet your specific needs. You will not be able to feel or see the lens and, as an added benefit, IOLs often correct refractive errors, producing crystal clear vision.
After Cataract Surgery
It is normal for itching or mild discomfort to be present in the first days following cataract surgery. It is important that you do not apply pressure to your eye and that you follow all of your cataract surgeon's postoperative advice to help ensure against complications.
A protective shield and prescription eye drops may be provided to help protect your eye and keep it clean. Make sure you use these things as directed by your cataract surgeon.
Your vision should become clear in a couple of days. Blurry vision will correct itself as your eye continues to heal. You will need to see your eye doctor two days after your surgery, again at one week, and finally one month after your procedure to ensure proper healing. You should contact your eye doctor if you experience any discomfort or vision disruptions in between visits.
