MIAMI, FL, June 02, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Commonly known as a nose job, rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that is intended to bring your nose into proper proportions with your other facial features. Many people are born with noses that simply do not compliment their faces. Others, through trauma or accidents have been left with a nose that is misshapen, crooked, or otherwise unbecoming. If you are unhappy with the size, shape, or appearance of your nose, a board-certified plastic surgeon can provide you with a customized rhinoplasty procedure that restores ideal dimensions and compliments your entire appearance.

Rhinoplasty Techniques

Rhinoplasty can be used on a specific part of your nose or to correct a number of issues at once. Depending on your unique needs, your plastic surgeon will choose either a closed or open rhinoplasty technique.

A closed rhinoplasty involves small incisions made inside of the nose while an open rhinoplasty will include an additional incision in the skin separating your nostrils. Closed rhinoplasty is ideal for minor surgical corrections and is often the first choice of many patients due to the elimination of visible scarring.

However, if you require open rhinoplasty, it is important to remember that, in the hands of a skilled, board-certified plastic surgeon, scarring should be minimal and become entirely unnoticeable following your recovery period. Your plastic surgeon will best be able to determine the technique most suited to meet your needs.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Following rhinoplasty, your plastic surgeon may apply splints, internal tubes, and packing to help your nose maintain its new shape. These will need to be kept in place until your plastic surgeon determines they are safe to remove - generally not longer than a few days. However, bandages may be kept in place for up to 10 days.

Some swelling will be present for the first few weeks. Swelling is common and should be temporary. Your plastic surgeon will provide you with instruction on how to minimize swelling along with medications to help reduce any discomfort.

Once swelling has subsided, the results of your rhinoplasty should be apparent. It may take a few months for your nose to completely settle in to its new shape, but this waiting period is most often well worth the results of your procedure. Barring trauma, your nose will maintain its new shape for a lifetime, providing you with the symmetrical, perfectly aligned look you deserve.
