NEW YORK, NY, June 06, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Rottenstein Law Group, which represents clients with injuries allegedly resulting from use of defective medical devices and dangerous prescription drugs including the Type 2 diabetes drug Actos, is hereby alerting the public to the most recent research substantiating the link between bladder cancer and actos, which was published on May 31, 2012 in the British Medical Journal (BMJ).
In the study, a team of Canadian researchers analyzed statistics from the National Health Service in the United Kingdom. The BMJ paper concludes that individuals with Type 2 diabetes who had taken pioglitazone (the generic name for Actos) had an 83 percent higher risk of developing bladder cancer. That's according to a June 2, 2012 article about the study that appeared on the Web site, redOrbit.com.
Researchers, led by Dr. Laurent Azoulay of the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, Quebec, examined the files of more than 115,000 patients who were at least 40 years old, the redOrbit article states. A total of 470 of those patients were diagnosed with bladder cancer. The likelihood of an Actos user developing bladder cancer increased with the length of time the patient took the drug, along with the strength of the prescribed dosage. The highest rate was observed in patients who took pioglitazone for more than 24 months, and patients with a cumulative dosage of more than 28,000 milligrams. That's according to the abstract that appears at the beginning of the BMJ research paper.
The Rottenstein Law Group advises anyone who has suffered adverse side effects from taking Actos or any other medication to speak with a qualified personal injury lawyer as soon as possible. The Rottenstein Law Group maintains an Actos Lawsuit Information Page that has social media features that allow for easy sharing on sites like Facebook and Twitter, enabling visitors to spread the word about the dangers of Actos.
