LOS ANGELES, CA, June 21, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Being a pedestrian is even more dangerous in the summer, says local Los Angeles injury attorney Michael Ehline. Recent news shows just how dangerous it can be as a pedestrian in Los Angeles and how deadly it can be for some people on foot. Crossing the street seems simple enough, Attorney Ehline said, since everyone was taught to look right and left before stepping off of the sidewalk and that drivers proceed with care at crosswalks. This no longer seems to be the case in Los Angeles, "especially during summer", he said.
Recent Examples of Pedestrian Accidents
Already, approaching summer, the LA Times reported that one of these deadly accidents took place June 18th at approximately 2:00 a.m. when a man was in a crosswalk at Central Avenue and 42nd Street in South Los Angeles. He reportedly was struck by a vehicle that threw him to the ground and while witnesses attempted to get him off of the street and out of harm's way, the man was struck by a second vehicle. This vehicle identified only as a large green SUV dragged the man several hundred feet. Police are still looking for the drivers that struck and killed the man crossing at Central Avenue and 42nd Street.
In an earlier pedestrian accident reported in the OC Register, the driver graced the pages of the news papers, with a video of the actual accident. The driver never stopped, after hitting the pedestrian. This accident occurred June 10th, when a 20 year old man was crossing Campus Drive at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. The young man was struck with enough force that it threw him into the vehicles windshield, into the air and then to the pavement. Video was obtained by police that showed the 20 year-old being struck and the vehicle leaving the scene of the accident.
The young man was seriously injured, but did not sustain life-threatening injuries. In a third pedestrian accident reported on ABC News, a 76 year-old woman was struck at Ventura Boulevard and Fallbrook Avenue at approximately 6:35 a.m. The woman was struck when a driver turned off of Ventura Avenue, westbound onto southbound Fallbrook. In this accident the driver did stop and wait for police to arrive. The 76 year-old woman was transported to the hospital by emergency rescue personnel. The Driver according to Los Angeles Valley Traffic Division was not cited in the accident.
Summer Distractions Can Lead to Accidents
It is not surprising that Lawyer Injury Attorney Michael Ehline, believes that things have changed. Ehline says, with a bad economy, and kids out of school during the summer, we are seeing more and more road rage and ordinary negligence calls in to our offices. "There are many distractions at the beach, such as girls in bikinis." "Kids will be kids", said Ehline. Dogs are out off the leash. Dogs attack other dogs and ultimately the owners can get bitten, or worse. Distractions cause injuries and pedestrians are usually the ones "I see" who are harmed the most. Ehline says we must take more care than looking both ways before stepping off of the sidewalk, not walk in bicycle lanes, stay off main highway sidewalks when possible, and always be on the alert in high traffic areas. "Think of more ideas on your own" Ehline said.
Holding Negligent Drivers Responsible
When injuries occur as a pedestrian that is struck by a careless driver in Los Angeles, the driver should be held responsible for the injuries they cause. Crosswalks are designated for pedestrians and they should be able to safely cross the street, without having a careless driver run them down.
