GUILFORD, CT, June 29, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- More and more men are seeking plastic surgery in New Haven and across the country, says Dr. Gary Price, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Connecticut.
"Men are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of cosmetic surgery," Dr. Price says. "Every year, I see more men who are interested in not only facial surgeries but also liposuction, tummy tucks and non-surgical options. They want to look young and fit and get rid of those stubborn areas of excess fat that just won't budge, no matter how much they diet or exercise."
His observations are backed up by The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Recently released ASAPS statistics show a 121% increase in cosmetic surgery procedures among men during the past 15 years. ASAPS figures also show that 9% of all cosmetic procedures in the United States during 2011 were performed on men.
Of course, Dr. Price still treats more women than men due to the popularity of procedures such as breast augmentation in CT. However, he is seeing an increasing number of men who have their own motivations for seeking plastic surgery.
Dr. Price cites the tough economy of the past couple of years as one reason for the increase.
"The tight job market has caused many people - particularly men in their 40s, 50s and even 60s - to become more aware of the need to present a younger, healthier image to potential employers. As a result, they are turning not only to plastic surgery but also to non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments.
"At my practice near New Haven, plastic surgery patients - both male and female - are seeking ways to look younger and healthier in order to give themselves a more competitive edge in the job market."
For this reason, much of the emphasis among men is on facial procedures, Dr. Price says.
ASAPS statistics show that a large percentage of male cosmetic surgery procedures focus on the face. According to ASAPS, the top five surgical procedures for men in 2011 were liposuction, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, reduction of excess breast tissue, and facelifts.
Media attention about this trend is increasing men's interest in cosmetic surgery, Dr. Price says.
"When men see these stories on TV and on the Internet, it helps erase any stigma that was once attached to male cosmetic procedures," he says. "They feel more comfortable because it's no longer considered unusual. They're hearing the message that plastic surgery is not just for women anymore."
