Facial Plastic Surgeon Comments on Decline in Number of Facelifts

Popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures may be the reason that fewer people are opting for a face lift, Toronto facial plastic surgeon Richard Rival says. Canadian statistics are hard to come by, but the U.S. saw a 9% drop in facelifts last year.

TORONTO, ON, June 30, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Richard Rival says he's not surprised by recent facelift statistics from The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Although the number of face lifts in the U.S. may be down, he says many people are still turning to surgical procedures such as face lift in Toronto.

"People are still choosing face lifts and brow lifts for facial rejuvenation at my practice," Dr. Rival says. "Although the number of face lift procedures may be down in the U.S., patients are still choosing surgical methods over non-surgical techniques when they want more dramatic results."

Dr. Rival attributes part of the decline in the number of U.S. facelifts to the increasing popularity of non-surgical treatments such as dermal fillers.

He says some of his patients are postponing face and eyelid surgery in Toronto by using less-invasive treatments such as BOTOX Cosmetic.

"Although surgical procedures are the most effective means for dramatically refreshing a person's appearance, non-surgical treatments can help rejuvenate the skin and postpone surgery," Dr. Rival says. "Injectable treatments temporarily smooth the skin to create a more youthful look. Advances in these products and treatment methods have helped doctors customize procedures and address a variety of patient needs."

Dr. Rival says one of the biggest decisions many patients face is whether to have surgical or non-surgical treatments. He says two factors - timing and the surgeon's qualifications - are key to making the right decisions.

"Surgical and non-surgical options each have their own set of benefits that don't necessarily outweigh each other," Dr. Rival says. "I recommend cosmetic surgery in Toronto when the patient is no longer satisfied by the results being achieved through non-surgical options.

"Regardless of the procedure, all patients should seek qualified specialists to assist in the decision-making process."

Dr. Richard Rival is a board-certified otolaryngologist and facial plastic surgeon specializing in nose surgery in Toronto. Dr. Rival graduated with honors from the University of Toronto medical school, is a diplomate of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and a fellow of the American and Canadian Academies of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
