PROVIDENCE, RI, July 27, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Respected pediatrician and medical educator, Edward McGookin, M.D., has been named as the first Chief Medical Officer at Coastal Medical. McGookin has been in practice with Coastal Medical Waterman Pediatrics since 1998, and has acted as Coastal Medical's Pediatric Medical Director since March, 2011.
In his new role as Chief Medical Officer, McGookin will be responsible for the oversight of all clinical activities at Coastal Medical. He will continue to improve the PCMH practice transformation process, maintain and expand the group's standards of care; as well as collaborate with leaders, both internally and externally, to understand, manage and reduce total cost of care for Coastal's 110,000 patient population.

McGookin has resigned from his position as the Director of Pediatric Education for the Family Medicine Residency Program at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island to take the Chief Medical Officer Position. He has been the recipient of multiple teaching awards, including the Dean's Award for Teaching Excellence, a recipient of RI Monthly's "Top Doctors" award every year since 2006, and a participant in the Pediatric Academic Society's Educational Scholars Program. McGookin attended LeMoyne College, Syracuse, NY - BS Biology, and received his MD from State University of New York Health Science Center, Syracuse, NY. He will continue to care for his patients at Waterman Pediatrics for the remainder of 2012.
