SmartLipo vs. Traditional Liposuction

Many men and women find that stubborn deposits of fat are not responsive to methods such as diet and exercise.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ, August 05, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Many men and women find that stubborn deposits of fat are not responsive to methods such as diet and exercise. To remove particularly tenacious deposits of fat, liposuction is often necessary. There are a number of liposuction techniques, each claiming to offer the most effective results. While there is some truth to the claim that new technologies offer better results, the real determining factor in your outcome is your choice of plastic surgeon.

Make sure you choose a plastic surgeon who is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and who offers various liposuction techniques. This will help ensure that your liposuction surgeon is both experienced and skilled at this procedure and that he can tailor your treatment to meet the specific needs and demands of your body.

Liposuction Techniques

All types of liposuction are performed with a cannula. A cannula is a small tube that is inserted into your skin to remove deposits of fatty tissue. With traditional liposuction, a sterile solution of saltwater and anesthetic is injected prior to the cannula to help break up deposits of fat, making them easier to remove.

Traditional liposuction is effective at removing deposits of fat from several areas of your body. It requires a bit more surgical time and recovery can take up to six weeks. During this time swelling, bruising, and some discomfort is common. Your plastic surgeon will work with you to help ensure your maximum comfort and safety during your recovery period.

Instead of using an injectable solution, SmartLipo uses a laser to liquefy fat cells prior to removal. This advancement in liposuction makes treating delicate areas such as behind the knees or around the neck and face much easier. It also may result in a more complete removal of fat.

Lasers cauterize as they cut. Due to this, SmartLipo may reduce bleeding and risks of infection.
Recovery from SmartLipo is also substantially shorter, often taking less than one week.

While SmartLipo may, at first, seem to be advantageous over traditional liposuction, it is not ideally suited to meet everyone's needs. Talk to your plastic surgeon about all of your options and what results you can expect from different techniques prior to committing to one particular method.
