Dr. Monica M. Jackson Recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for Excellence in Ancient Jewelry Research

Dr. Monica Jackson discovered her love for her field at a very early age

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA, September 4, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Monica M. Jackson, a Research Associate in the Department of Archaeology at The University of Sydney, has been recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in ancient jewelry research.

Dr. Jackson is a classical archaeologist, author and lecturer specializing in the Mediterranean, Aegean and Black Sea areas. She has participated in excavations in Greece, Cyprus and further east. Her particular area of research is the study of Hellenistic gold jewelry as chronological evidence. In fact, she has published and lectured extensively in Australia, USA and England on topics of jewelry, luxury arts, cultural heritage as well as ancient Greek history, religion and art. Currently, she is a Research Associate in the Department of Archaeology at The University of Sydney, a position that enables her to share her research with academics, students and the general public by delivering lectures at venues such as universities, museums, and on specialty cruises.

Dr. Jackson was a young girl attending boarding school in Brisbane when she discovered her niche in archaeology. Her Ancient History teacher singled her out to be an A+ student who would do exceptionally well. Although she was not an A+ student at that time, she believed she could achieve this goal and she ultimately did just that. Dr. Jackson was also influenced by the great rational optimist Norman Macrae (1923-2000), deputy editor of The Economist. This man believed that human ingenuity was boundless as long as it was allowed to flourish. His ideas were rooted in 19th century English liberalism that celebrated the individual over the collective, progress over reaction and free thought over superstition. Many of these ideas began with the ancient Greeks, whose philosophy, science, mythology, architecture, art (vases, sculptures, jewelry) are like open volumes celebrating human life and intellectual achievement, with man at the centre. Such knowledge led her to excel in her career. She attributes her 27 years of success to her dream of raising the status of jewelry to a level of academic acceptance where it is now considered as serious archaeological evidence. Looking ahead, she aspires to continue publishing, lecturing and research in Australia and internationally.

Dr. Jackson earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Ancient History and Anthropology from The University of Queensland before attaining a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology followed by a Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology from The University of Sydney. In fact, the highlight of her career was publishing her Ph.D. thesis in "Hellenistic Gold Eros Jewellery: Technique, Style, and Chronology," as a well-reviewed book. In addition she has published numerous scholarly papers throughout her career. Staying abreast of the changes in her industry, Dr. Jackson is a Fellow of The Society of Antiquaries of London and a Board member of the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens. She retains her membership with The Australasian Society of Classical Studies, The Society of Friends of the Nicholson Museum at The University of Sydney, The Archaeological Institute of America, The University of Sydney Arts Association, The Society of Jewellery Historians (U.K.), The American Society of Jewelry Historians and the Foundation for International Cultural Diplomacy. Away from the demands of her work, Dr. Jackson enjoys going to the theater, reading and listening to music.
