Some of the self-parking cars available are not entirely autonomous, although they make it much easier to slide into an available space. You still must regulate the car's speed using the brake pedal. Fortunately, your car's idle speed is sufficient to complete the maneuver. Once the on-board computer takes over, your input is greatly reduced.

HOW IT WORKS
The process begins when your car pulls forward, directly parallel to the front car. A signal lets you known when it's time to stop and you should shift into reverse while slightly release the brake. The computer will guide the car backwards.

With the help of the power-steering system, the computer will turn the wheel and to perfectly maneuver into your desired parking space.

Once the car is far enough into the parking space, another signal will let you know you should stop and shift into drive.

Finally, another signal lets you know when the parking process is complete.

VARIOUS METHODS
Different self-parking options have different methods of sensing their relation to objects around the car. Some sensors are found around the rear and front bumpers. These act as both receivers and transmitter. The sensors send-out small signals that bounce off objects around the car and reflect the reading back to the sensor. The on-board computer then calculates the location of these objects by examining the amount of time it takes for the signals to bounce back.

Other systems use radar or cameras mounted onto the car's bumper to detect any objects.

BMW recently created a top-of-the line version that allows you to operate the system from outside the car. This could be particularly advantageous should you have to repeatedly squeeze into tight spaces in parking garages.
