Traditional lipoosuction involves the indiscriminate removal of not only just fat, but also other vital tissues such as collagen fibers, blood vessels and nerves. This approach to the removal of fat leaves the patient with extensive bruising, a prolonged recovery time, an increased risk of complications, and a higher possibility of complications such as asymetrical results and dimpling. For these reasons alone, traditional liposuction is rapidly becoming outdated.

Newer technologies such as the SmartLipo laser and VASER LipoSelection ultrasound unit are becoming more widely accepted in the cosmetic medical industry. These technologies offers patients a much less invasive approach to accomplishing the same, if not better, results than traditional liposuction. Both SmartLipo and VASER can be performed in the office with using only a local anesthetic, thereby eliminating the risks and additional cost of undergoing general anesthesia.

VASER LipoSelection is a newer generation of ultrasound assisted lipolysis. A small pencil sized wand is inserted just beneath the skin and specifically tuned sound waves are emitted. These sound waves selectively "shatter" fat cells and ONLY fat cells. This technology untilizes the same principles that allow an opera singer to shatter a crystal champagne glass by singing at just the right frequency and pitch. Using VASER allows Isis physicians to liquefy the fat tissue, and only the fat tissue, with minimal disruption to other vital tissues. The liquified fat can then be gently suctioned or manually massaged out of the body. Removal of fat in liquid form is important in that it provides the patient with minimal brusing and significantly shortens the recovery time to usually 12-36 hours.

SmartLipo is the latest FDA approved technology for the removal fat. SmartLipo was FDA approved in October of 2006, and was used extensively in Europe prior to its US FDA approval. Isis Cosmetic was the first center in Tampa to be granted the use of this technology and continues to be the leading center in the region with regard to the number of patients being treated as well as the results obtained. With SmartLipo a small "angel hair pasta" size fiber is inserted underneath the skin and the laser's heat energy allows fat tissue to be melted. Additionally, a guide light allows the physician performing the procedure to see exactly where the laser is. This visualization of where exactly the laser is and what areas have been treated further enhances the physician's ability to obtain symetrical results. As with VASER LipoSelection, the liquified fat is then removed with gentle suction or manual massage. An added benefit provided by SmartLipo is that the energy released by the laser causes the collagen fibers to contract and new collagen to form. When collagen contracts and new collagen forms the body tissue is then tightened and appears more youthful. Again, since other vital tissues are not being largely removed, there is minimal bruising and a significantly reduced recovery time of 12-36 hours.

Moverover, combining the use of both technologies allows Isis Cosmetic physicians to accomplish a large amount of safe and selective fat removal using VASER LipoSelection, and a precise fine sculpting and skin tightening using the SmartLipo laser. The patient then achieves the same if not better results than they would have with traditional liposuction. Moreover, there with a drastically reduced recovery time and less risk of complications.
