Concern About Campus Safety at Colleges and Universities Triggers Uptick in Wireless Home Security Sales

LifeShield Security introduces national crime data specifically geared to college campuses and surrounding areas.

YARDLEY, PA, September 28, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Each year, hundreds of thousands of students head off to colleges and universities across the nation. While many students are anxious about dorm room assignments, friends, and finding the right classroom, they are also growing increasingly concerned about campus safety.

LifeShield Security is now tracking crime statistics for some of the country's top college campuses to help create awareness about local crime on campus and in surrounding areas. Crime statistics are collected from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's annual Uniform Crime Report and offers data by category: Population, Violent Crime, Murder, Forcible Rape, Robbery, Aggravated Assault, Property Crime, Burglary, Larceny-Theft, Motor-Vehicle Theft and Arson.

LifeShield.com also offers a great resource for college students to learn more about campus safety and the values of having a security system at school. Parents and students alike can find peace-of-mind knowing they are protected by a LifeShield wireless security system.

"For many students, this is the first time they are away from home with no parental supervision and they find themselves in new territory when it comes to personal safety and responsibility," said Shannon Dominello, CMO, LifeShield. "We have noticed a significant uptick of parents ordering an alarm system to secure their child's dorm room or campus apartment. College students are ordering security systems too, because they are much more aware of campus crime these days, and know that to be proactive about safety in their new home-away-from-home is a very smart move."

Campus Safety
With thousands of students living in such close proximity, there are simple safety precautions all students can put in to practice to reduce incidents:
- Lock your doors! Always lock doors and windows when you leave home; never leave doors unlocked when you are home; lock doors before you go to bed.
- If you see someone or something suspicious, contact campus authorities immediately. If you're shy about doing so, report the tip anonymously.
- Never label your keys with your name or address. If you lose your keys, change your locks immediately.
- Never buzz anyone into your dorm or apartment whom you don't know.
- Study your campus map and memorize where phones and emergency boxes are located.
- Don't walk alone at night; always have a friend with you. If you are alone, call campus security or a taxi to get you home safely.
- Always be aware of your surroundings; this includes knowing current crime trends on campus. Encourage your school to publish crime reports in the newspaper.
- Keep money and items of value inside of drawers or locked away. A passerby may notice what you left on your desk and be tempted to enter your room.
- Be sure your home security system is always enabled, even when you are at home.
