VANCOUVER, BC, October 19, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Whether you are making a sales pitch, trying to convert colleagues to a new idea or promoting a charity or fundraiser, knowing some persuasive writing techniques can make a huge difference to the likelihood of a successful outcome. Consider the 5 tips below:
1. Be personal
Use pronouns such as 'we', 'I' and 'you', particularly 'you' - 'you' based statements tend to be far more successful when it comes to selling your idea. Make your reader feel as if you are having a private conversation with them, addressing them, in particular, rather than the world at large.
2. Repetition
Generally, we advise against repetition - it can often be redundant. However, if you wish to persuade someone to your way of thinking then it helps to repeat your main idea. Don't overdo it but be sure to return to your main point once or twice during your writing. You want to establish your point firmly in the reader's mind.
3. Flattery
Flattering or complimenting your reader considerably increases the chance that they will be on your side - or at least give consideration to your proposal. Be subtle about it, for example: "Knowledgeable customers will appreciate the advantages of this form of investment." Readers immediately feel they have been recognized as 'knowledgeable' and are reading on in a positive frame of mind!
4. Appeal to the emotions
This works particularly well for charitable appeals; few can resist a poor abandoned dog that needs rescuing, a child desperately seeking education or the displaced victims of a natural disaster. Use point number 1 here also - encourage your reader to empathize by making it personal and enable them to imagine themselves in a similar situation.
5. Address objections
The best way to ensure your proposition is favourably received is to foresee likely objections - and shoot them down. Your reader now has no valid reason to refuse your request! For example: "You may feel that you do not have the funds for this but once the capital investment is made, the suggested improvements will pay for themselves within a year."
