OAKVILLE, ON, CANADA, October 3, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ --Dr. Jane C. Gilbert, a Psychiatrist and Director of the Bear Clinic, has been recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in providing an integrative approach to psychiatric services.
After playing for two years as the lead violinist for the Edmonton Philharmonic Orchestra, Dr. Gilbert decided that she needed to do more to help people. Trading a successful music career for a vocation where she could make a difference in the lives of others, she earned a doctorate in 1989 from the University of Toronto. Dr. Gilbert completed her residency in psychiatry in 1996 following the completion of her doctorate, and she also holds a bachelor's degree in psychology.
Going on to develop an emergency psychiatry position at Halton Healthcare Services, Dr. Gilbert began her career mainly working in hospital settings. She radiates a kindness that makes patients feel cared for right away, and she has provided immediate access to mental health services for acute mental health patients. She has managed an eating disorder clinic and a day program rendering psychiatric care alternatives, and she also has experience treating depression. Even though it is the most common mental health illness, depression is misunderstood and rarely discussed or given much funding and credibility. Utilizing her expertise in dealing with one of the hardest organs to study, Dr. Gilbert was challenged with finding new ways of treating it.
Dr. Gilbert's advice for others who are thinking about entering into the challenging field of psychiatry is to embrace the constant change and exciting new technology that is being developed to study the brain, such as the functional MRI. For any leader or visionary to succeed, Dr. Gilbert believes personal sacrifices must be made first. She understands that change goes along with the package, and she believes her ability to adapt to new situations sets her apart from others in her field. Dr. Gilbert is well known for developing innovative programs in hospitals, but she felt she couldn't achieve the environment she wanted for her patients within the confines of a hospital. Non-medical administrative individuals, such as managers, who are not vision-oriented but are more about the dollars and cents, would often automatically say no to her ideas because they did not know how to come up with the money for funding. Determined to provide the psychiatric care she knew she was capable of, Dr. Gilbert was convinced she needed to go out into the community to do it.
The opening of Dr. Gilbert's clinic stemmed from the culmination of more than 25 years of experience working in the mental health field. At the Bear Clinic, more is given to the patient apart from just improving their quality of life and mental health. Using integrative psychiatry techniques which combine both conventional and alternative methods of psychiatric care, Dr. Gilbert and her team help individuals function at their optimal level. Preferring to use alternative, non-pharmaceutical treatments whenever possible, practitioners at the Bear Clinic assume that the body has an innate capacity and ability to heal, self-repair and adapt to injury, loss or stress. Thus, the goal of therapy is to foster and support that innate capacity. At the Bear Clinic, patients become more than physical bodies; they are productive members of society and mental, emotional and spiritual beings. Unlike many traditional doctors or therapists who spend little time with patients, Dr. Gilbert and those at the Clinic are committed to forming therapeutic relationships with patients.
Dedicated to practicing what she preaches, Dr. Gilbert ensures she always has a basis for the treatment she prescribes and has some grounding and balance in life. She understands that patients don't want to just be talked to, they want to be shown how to get better in a way they can easily comprehend. Dr. Gilbert stresses that the environment in the clinic must remain inviting and reflect a world made up of nature that comes together and makes us whole human beings. She also hopes her holistic view makes patients feel comfortable asking any question, challenging both her and themselves as they actively engage in a treatment plan. The clinic thrives on receiving constant feedback from its patients so Dr. Gilbert and her team can continue to be open-minded and mold treatment plans to suit the mental health needs of every individual who comes through the clinic door.
In the future, Dr. Gilbert looks forward to participating in more promotions to get the word out about The Bear Clinic. Her goal is to erase some of the stigmas and shame associated with specific illnesses, which often creates a barrier when attempting to promote new treatments. She also wishes to get the public's and media's attention and obtain additional funding. Dr. Gilbert is excited to continue blending eastern and western scientifically backed methods of treatment and therapy, and she intends to bring into the Clinic additional professionals in different specialties who can work together as a well established, multidisciplinary team.
Away from the demands of running her clinic, Dr. Gilbert enjoys playing the violin, traveling and spending time with her two children.
